Seesaw is a portfolio app that students and teachers can use to document their students work. You can add everything from images, to videos, to drawings, to links of content created in other apps to Seesaw's classroom database. Below you will find a quick step-by-step tutorial for getting started using Seesaw.
This TED talk from Ken Robinson is brilliant, but there is one section in particular that is important to the work we are doing to personalize the learning of the children at Shakerag. Jump ahead to 13:50 (or watch the whole thing) and watch for about 2:00.
His metaphor for moving from an industrial model of education to an agricultural model is precisely what we are doing as we become stronger in our practices implementing the workshop model inside of our classrooms. Farmers use varied strategies for growing different crops. Not every seed cultivates in the same climate, soil, or even under the same conditions. They must also provide just-in-time direct instruction when they see that their crops are not flourishing. Some years particular crops take longer to bloom than others, flexible pacing.
All of these personalized learning principles are evident in the workshop format that we use in our classrooms. As we move forward cultivating our student's learning with this agricultural model in mind, we all continue to do what is best for our students.
Welcome everyone. I recently redesigned my website to reflect the work that Shakerag Elementary is doing as we learn more about personalized learning. As reflected in our vision above, we strive to "provide a personalized learning experience for our students through effective workshop model instruction". This website is broken down into sections to help our teachers better understand and effectively implement the workshop model into their classrooms.
I have also included a page of resources to support the work we have committed to during our Enrichment Block. Please use the comment box below to let me know what other information you would find helpful. I plan on creating pages of student example of work in the near future. Until then, please enjoy.
